Box Score NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's soccer team moved to 1-2-1 in the Northeast Conference Friday night with a 2-0 loss to the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils at CCSU Soccer Field.
Shots were few and far between in the first half. Central Connecticut (7-4-3, 2-1-1 NEC) had the first shot of the game in the fifth minute when Julie Lavoie had a shot saved by Talia Schwartz (Roslyn, N.Y.). Lavoie also sent a header wide in the 23rd minute. The lone Sacred Heart (6-7-2, 1-2-1 NEC) shot in the half came in the 36th minute when Monica Re (Doylestown, Pa.) put an attempt at goal wide of the mark. Schwartz had to make one more save in the half, stopping a shot from Tori Sousa in the 43rd minute to keep the game goalless heading into halftime.
The Blue Devils got on the scoreboard just shy of the hour mark. Danica Foglio fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box, going across the goal and past Schwartz to give Central Connecticut a 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, the Pioneers had their lone shot on goal when Jillian Picinich (Bellmore, N.Y.) fired a shot right at Blue Devils goalkeeper Nicki Turley. Central Connecticut outshot Sacred Heart 8-2 in the second half, adding a second goal in the 88th minute. Kelly Halligan hit a corner kick that was headed in by Jennifer Cafferky.
Central Connecticut outshot Sacred Heart for the game 12-3. Schwartz made four saves for the Pioneers as Turley needed to make just one for the shutout.
The Pioneers are back in action on Friday, Oct. 24 as Sacred Heart travels to Fairleigh Dickinson for a 7 p.m. game.
