Pioneers Drop Two on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fairfield, Conn. (April 27, 2013)—Kate Nadler (Southbury, Conn.) went 4-for-7 at the plate Sunday as the Sacred Heart Softball team dropped both games of the doubleheader to Mount St. Mary's on "Senior Day." SHU attempted comebacks in both games, but could never get it done, falling 3-2 and 2-1. The Pioneers drop to 22-26 on the season and 4-12 in conference with the pair of losses.

Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.) held the Mountaineers scoreless through the first four innings of game one, before MSM put up three runs in the fifth. The rookie put the first five batters on base, giving up four hits and two walks resulting in all three runs before Taylor Lane (Lisbon, Conn.) came in in relief.

Lane was lights out through the rest of the game, striking out two and only allowing three runners on base.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers rallied for an impressive comeback. With one out, Courtney Machamer (Williamstown, Penn.), Melissa Tobin (Hudson, Mass.) and Jade Bowins (Frederick, Md.) knocked back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. After Nadler popped out, freshman Wendi Westmark (Brookfield, Conn.) slapped a two-run single to right field. But the comeback was cut short as Annie Dreher (Saugus, Calif.) struck out to end the game 3-2.

Mount St. Mary's took an early lead in the second game, getting two runs off starter Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) in the first inning. That was all they got though, as the sophomore held them scoreless for the latter six innings.

Sacred Heart had opportunities in the first three innings, but were unable to bring a runner home until the fourth. With one out, Wentworth managed a walk and was moved to second on a Mount error before Bowins' single to centerfield sent her home for the Pioneers' only run of the game.

Wentworth took the 2-1 loss after tossing a complete game giving up two runs on six hits while striking out three.

The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday for a doubleheader against the Manhattan Jaspers in their last home game of the season.
