SHU Scores Four In 9th to Down Fairfield, 7-5

Fairfield, CT The Sacred Heart baseball team scored four runs in the ninth en route to a 7-5 win over cross-town rival Fairfield on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field in Fairfield. Senior shortstop John Murphy's single with the bases loaded would tie the game up at five in the ninth for SHU and a sac fly by Jesus Medina (New York, NY) would bring around the game winning run in the ninth.  SHU improves to 19-17 on the season.

Senior captain John Murphy (Seymour, CT) went 2-5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.

Sophomore Billy McDonough (Ballston Spa, NY) made his pitching debut for the Pioneers, throwing a scoreless 8th and 9th innings, setting up SHU for the comeback.

Sacred Heart allowed just one earned run on the afternoon, making an uncharacteristic four errors. Fairfield's lone earned run came in the fourth on a Alex Witkus single up the middle, scoring Dean Sadik that made it 2-0 Fairfield.

SHU scored their first runs in the seventh. Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) came home on an error by the Stags to cut into Fairfield's 3-0 lead. Freshman Brian Castles (Holbrook, NY) would then single in junior Derick Horn (Valatie, NY) to make the score 3-2.

Sacred Heart would score their third run on a Matt Charmello (Rossmoor, CA) double down the right field line to score John Murphy. Murphy reached base on a single.

Down 5-3 in the ninth, Castles walked with one out to start the rally.  Freshman Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY) followed Castles with a base hit to left field. McDonough singled through the sight side to load the bases for the Pioneers with one out.  Senior shortstop John Murphy (Seymour, CT) would single through the right side to score Castles and Sullivan to tie the game up at five. Medina would follow Murphy with a sacrifice fly to bring in the game winning run for the Pioneers. Murphy would come around to score on back-to-back wild pitches to make it 7-5 SHU.

Sacred Heart heads to Monmouth this weekend for a four game series. SHU and Monmouth are currently tied for second in the NEC with identical 14-6 conference records.
