SHU Baseball Picks Up Two Wins Over CCSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

New Britain, CT – The Sacred Heart baseball team won two NEC games Saturday afternoon over NEC and in-state rival Central Connecticut State. SHU won game one 6-5, and then took game two 3-0 behind a complete game shutout from junior Nick Leiningen. With the two wins, the Pioneers improve to 10-4 in the NEC.

In the first game of the afternoon, sophomore Dan Wertz (Cross River, NJ) registered his first win of the season for the Pioneers, pitching three scoreless innings in relief.

Sacred Heart got on the board first, getting off to the early 3-0 lead in the second inning. Freshman Jesus Medina singled up the middle to score Rocco Gondek (Glastonbury, CT). Senior captain Jonathan Servilla (Fairfield, CT) would then double to left center to score Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY). Medina would come around to score on a passed ball.

Sacred Heart would blow the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring the four runs to take the lead 5-3. Mike Washburn, Dylan Delacruz and Connor Fitzsimons all had RBI singles off SHU starting pitcher Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT).

The Pioneers would not be down for long, back-to-back opposite field singles in the seventh by Medina and Sullivan would tie the game up at five. Seniors Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) and Gondek would come around to score. Medina went 4-5 at the dish in game one with 2 RBI and a run scored.

SHU would go on to score the game clinching run in the eighth on a Dave Boisture sac fly to deep center to score John Murphy (Seymour, CT). Murphy reached on a walk and moved all the way over to third on a failed pick-off attempt by the Blue Devils.

Junior Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) got the start for the Pioneers in game two. Leiningen pitched his second consecutive complete game shutout to improve to 4-2 on the season. Leiningen scattered just four hits and struck out six Blue Devils.

SHU would again strike first in game two, this time in the top of the first inning with an RBI single by junior Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) scoring lead-off hitter Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY).

In the fifth, John Murphy laced a two out base hit to center to score Flint and Sullivan, providing all the runs the Pioneers would need.

Sacred Heart and Central finish their series tomorrow afternoon with another doubleheader starting at noon.
