Sacred Heart Shutdown by Stony Brook

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Sacred Heart Softball team was swept by Stony Brook in Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader. After being shutout in the first game 11-0, the Pioneers pushed game two all the way to the final outs before the Seawolves prevailed 3-2. The sweep drops SHU to 17-17 on the season.

The Pioneers only managed three hits in the first game; three singles by Jade Bowins (Frederick, Md.), Kate Nadler (Southbury, Conn.) and Jenn Robillard (Plainville, Mass.). Despite having two chances with a runner in scoring position in the first and third innings, Sacred Heart was shut out, as Stony Brook went on to score 11 runs.

Taylor Lane (Lisbon, Conn.) got the start for SHU only going 2.1 innings. The junior gave up a manageable two runs on Gina Bianculli's two-run blast over the centerfield wall, but got into trouble in the third. The first three batters all reached with singles before Lane was relieved by Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.). The sophomore didn't fare much better, giving up four consecutive hits after getting an out with a fielder's choice. The Seawolves scored a total of nine runs in the inning improving their lead to 11-0.

Sidor got the loss in the latter game pitching a complete 6.1 innings, giving up only two earned runs and eight hits, striking out six batters. Nadler picked up the Pioneers' only RBI in the fifth innings.

The Seawolves jumped out to a quick lead with their first two batters of the game doubling and singling resulting in a run. Sidor managed to hold them scoreless for the next four innings, while Sacred Heart took the lead with a run in the second and another in the fifth.

Sidor led SHU off with a double in the second inning and moved to third on Wentworth's sacrifice bunt before a bad throw by Stony Brook's shortstop brought her home.

Robillard, who was 1-for-1 in the game, scored SHU's other run, reaching after being hit by a pitch and getting knocked in by Nadler's double. Stony Brook held the Pioneers to just those two runs as they put up one in the sixth to tie and the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Sacred Heart continues conference play Saturday when they head to Fairleigh Dickinson for a doubleheader with the Knights.
