Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – For the second night in a row, the Sacred Heart men's hockey team fell victim to a three-goal Robert Morris second period, losing to the Colonials 6-1 at 84 Lumber Arena on Saturday night. Robert Morris swept the first round Atlantic Hockey tournament series and moves on to the quarterfinals.

Sacred Heart (2-30-4) had an early chance to score first, but Brian Sheehan's (St. Louis, Mo.) shot on the breakaway went wide off Robert Morris (20-12-4) goaltender Eric Levine's glove. The Pioneers had two point blank chances at the 13:07 mark, but both Eric Delong (Oakville, Man.) and Ben Ketchum (Greenwich, Conn.) were denied by Levine. The Colonials got on the board with 10:33 to play when Colin South put a shot off the goal post, then knocked in his own rebound to give Robert Morris a 1-0 lead.

The Colonials had a chance for a 2-0 lead when Chad Barthelmess (Norristown, Pa.) took a cross-checking penalty with 6:23 to play in the first. Robert Morris had an Adam Brace shot saved by Andrew Bodnarchuk (Saskatoon, Sask.) and a Cody Wydo chance go off the post before Sacred Heart killed off the power play. The Pioneers tied the game 1-1 with 3:46 remaining in the opening period. Kyle Verbeek (Birmingham, Mich.) slapped a Ben Lake (Calgary, Alb.) pass right by Levine to level the game. Nick Curry (Augusta, Ga.) also assisted on the goal. Robert Morris held a 16-12 advantage in shots in the first period, but the score was tied entering the second period.

Robert Morris broke the tie 2:21 into the second period when Tyler Hynds let loose a blast from the blue line past Bodnarchuk to make the score 2-1. Sacred Heart had a chance to tie the game with 14:10 remaining when Delong's shot on the breakaway went off Levine's mask. The Colonials then took the puck down the length of the ice and scored. Wydo tallied the Robert Morris goal with an assist from Scott Jacklin, quickly putting the Colonials ahead 3-1 with 13:59 to play in the second. Robert Morris extended the lead to 4-1 with 2:19 left in the second on a Matt Cope goal. The Pioneers had two power plays in the second period, but failed to capitalize on either extra-man opportunity.  Sacred Heart had its third power play with 1:36 to play in the second, but had three shots blocked before the period ended.  Robert Morris tacked on two goals in the third period to win the game and sweep the series.

Sacred Heart finishes the 2012-13 season with a record of 2-30-4.
