Men's Hockey Loses 4-0 To UConn On Senior Day

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team wrapped up its regular season on Saturday with a 4-0 loss to the Connecticut Huskies at Webster Bank Arena. Prior to the game, the Sacred Heart Department of Athletics honored the nine seniors on the 2012-13 squad – Ben Ketchum, Steven Legatto, Doug MacLean, Neil McKenney, Mitchell Stretch, Alex Stuart, Kyle Verbeek, assistant captain Tommy Castonguay, and captain Eric Delong – for Senior Day.

Sacred Heart (2-28-4, 2-21-4 AHA) and UConn (17-13-4, 14-10-3 AHA) played an even first period. The Huskies outshot the Pioneers 14-13, but Legatto and UConn goaltender Matt Grogan kept the game scoreless in the first period. Sacred Heart had two power play chances in the first period, but Grogan stopped eight shots on those power plays.

The Huskies controlled play in the second period, outshooting the Pioneers 19-10. UConn finally broke through with a goal with 1:28 remaining in the second period when Joey Ferriss slapped a Tom Janosz rebound past Legatto to make the score 1-0. The Huskies took a 2-0 lead 1:12 into the third period on a Trevor Gerling goal. The Pioneers had 10 shots in the third period, but could not score on Grogan Saturday. UConn added two goals late in the third to win 4-0.

UConn outshot Sacred Heart 46-33 for the game. Legatto made 42 saves for the Pioneers as Grogan had 33 for the shutout. Sacred Heart was 0-for-7 on the power play Saturday with 17 shots with the extra man. The Huskies were 1-for-5 on the power play.

Sacred Heart will enter the first round of the Atlantic Hockey playoffs next weekend as the #12 seed. The Pioneers will travel to either Robert Morris or Mercyhurst for a best two-out-of-three series. Robert Morris is currently fifth in Atlantic Hockey with 28 points, with Mercyhurst one point behind them. The two teams play Saturday night.
