Sacred Heart Comes Back Twice To Beat Army 6-5

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Trailing 5-3 heading into the third period, the Sacred Heart men's hockey team scored three unanswered goals to beat the Army Black Knights 6-5 Friday night at Tate Rink.

Drew George (Regina, Sask.) and Daniel Lisi (King City, Ont.) each had a goal and an assist in the win, which snapped a seven-game losing streak. David Iacono (Newmarket, Ont.) and Justin Danforth (Oshawa, Ont.) both had two assists.

Sacred Heart (3-8-0, 2-3-0 AHA) had to go on the penalty kill 2:14 into the game, but the Pioneers came though unscathed. The Pioneers had a chance to take the lead with 15:27 left when Jordan Minello (Sweaburg, Ont.) took a pass at blue line behind the Army (1-9-0, 1-6-0 AHA) defense, skated into the zone and fired a shot at Rob Tadazak that was saved. The Black Knights took a 1-0 lead with 11:15 to play in the first when Zak Zaremba knocked in the rebound of a Brian Schultz shot. Army extended the lead to 2-0 with 10:33 left in the period when Joe Kozlak scored five seconds into the Black Knights' second power play of the game.

Army took a 3-0 lead with 9:46 remaining in the first period when Josh Richards fired a shot off Alex Vazzano's blocker and into the net. Sacred Heart got on the board with 2:33 to play in the period when Ben Lake (Calgary, Alb.) scored a shorthanded goal. Lake picked off an Army pass at the Pioneers' blue line, then went the length of the ice and scored to make the score 3-1 heading into the second period.

The Pioneers closed to within a goal 41 seconds into the second period. Lisi knocked in a one-timer from George for his first career goal and point, making the score 3-2. Sacred Heart then tied the game 3-3 with 11:07 remaining as Jake Lynes (Ellicott City, Md.) knocked in the rebound of an Erlich Doerksen (Toronto, Ont.) shot. Spencer Graboski (Quesnel, B.C.) and Doerksen both recorded an assist on the tying goal, their first career points. Army took back the lead, 4-3, with 4:40 left in the period on Josh Richards' second goal of the night. Ten seconds later, Mac Lalor scored to put the Black Knights back up two 5-3.

Sacred Heart controlled play early in the third, forcing Army goaltender Rob Tadazak to make six saves in the first seven minutes. Mitch Nylen (Lawrenceville, Ga.) got the Pioneers back within a goal with 11:09 to play in the game, scoring off assists by Lisi and David Iacono (Newmarket, Ont.) to get the score to 5-4. Sacred Heart then went on the power play with 8:23 left as C.J. Reuschlein went off for roughing. Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, Mo.) won the ensuing faceoff to Justin Danforth (Oshawa, Ont.) who fed Will Rayner for a shot from the slot that went past Tadazak and in to tie the game 5-5 nine seconds into the power play. The Pioneers finally broke through and took the lead with 2:12 remaining in the game. Drew George scored on the power play, knocking in the rebound of an Iacono laser to give Sacred Heart a 6-5 lead. Army pulled its goaltender in the last minute, with the Pioneers stopping two shots in the final minute to preserve their first win in eight games.

The Pioneers outshot Army 38-32 for the game, and 31-21 in the final two periods. Sacred Heart was 2-for-4 on the power play as the Black Knights were 1-for-6. Tadazak made 32 saves for Army as Andrew Bodnarchuk (Saskatoon, Sask.) had 20 saves in relief of Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.).

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night, Saturday, Nov. 12 for a 7 p.m. game at the Danbury Ice Arena in Danbury, Conn. The game is being televised live on CPTV Sports.
