Sacred Heart Can't Hold Off Army Comeback, Falls 6-2 To Black Knights

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team led the Army Black Knights 2-0 10:16 into Tuesday night's game, but the Pioneers offense stalled as Army came back to win 6-2 at Webster Bank Arena.

Sacred Heart (2-7-0, 1-3-0 AHA) got on the scoreboard 6:18 into the hockey game. Justin Danforth (Oshawa, Ont.) scored on the breakaway with assists from linemates Jordan Minello (Sweaburg, Ont.) and Evan Jasper (Whitby, Ont.) to put the Pioneers up 1-0. The assist extended Jasper's point-scoring streak to four consecutive games. The Pioneers then took a 2-0 lead at 10:16 with a power play tally. Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, Mo.) scored his second goal of the season right in front of the net, knocking in the rebound of a Minello assist. Mitch Nylen (Lawrenceville, Ga.) also had an assist on the goal. Minello's assist gave him his third multiple-point effort of the season. Army (1-6-0, 1-3-0 AHA), which outshot Sacred Heart 14-8 in the opening period, closed to within a goal with 1:10 left in the first on Maurice Alvarez's first goal of the game.

The Pioneers found themselves in the penalty box early in the second period. Jasper went off for boarding 49 seconds in to the period, with Jeff Carroll (Kingston, Ont.) also called for boarding 13 seconds later. The Black Knights tied the game 2-2 at 1:58 as Clint Carlisle scored on a 5-on-3 power play for Army. Less than a minute later, Army put up another power play goal as Alvarez scored right in front of the Sacred Heart net to make the score 3-2. The Pioneers had an opportunity to tie the game midway through the second period on the power play. Danforth put a shot off the goalpost during that power play, with Sheehan and Neil Fachini (East Hampton, Conn.) also hitting the post in the period. Army extended its lead to 4-2 with a Zak Zaremba strike with 5:05 left in the second period. Sacred Heart outshot Army 11-9 in the third period, but the Black Knights tacked on two more goals in the period for the 6-2 win.

For the game, Army outshot the Pioneers 37-26. The Black Knights also were 3-for-5 on the power play, with Sacred Heart going 1-for-4. Rob Tadazak made 24 saves for Army while Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.) had 31 saves for the Pioneers.

Sacred Heart steps out of conference on Saturday, Nov. 16 when it travels to New Haven to take on the defending National Champions #9 Yale at 7 p.m.
