FAIRFIELD, CT (March 21, 2012) - The Sacred Heart women's tennis team picked-up a 4-3 win over Fairfield University Wednesday afternoon at home on the SHU Tennis Courts. The Pioneers clinched the match thanks to a three-set, tie-break win over at #2 singles by freshman Nicole Rydzewski (Maspeth, NY).
The Pioneers won the doubles point thanks to wins at #2 and #3. Sophomore Gabi Kaldan (New Brunswick, NJ) and senior Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) won 8-4 over over Allison Radde and Tori Pirello at #2 doubles. Rydzewski and senior Kristin Legenza (Berlin, CT) beat Carolina Koladzyn and Emma Samson, 8-4.
Senior Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) and classmate Downing posted straight-set singles win. Donnelly won 6-4 and 6-4 over Radde at #3 singles. Downing posted a 6-0 and 6-3 win over Pirello at #5.
Rydzewski clinched the win for the Pioneers at #2 singles over Sharissa Ryan. Rydzewski dropped the first set 6-1 and rebounded for a 6-2 win in set two. She battled her way back from down 4-1 to win the third set tie-breaker 7-5.
The Pioneers will host Providence on Sunday at 1 pm.
