Men's Hockey Falls Short 3-1 Against Mercyhurst

Box Score

(Bridgeport, CT) – The Sacred Men's Hockey team ran in to a goalie in the zone, as Mercyhurst netminder Jordan Tibbett stopped all 20 third-period shots for a game-total of 39 saves in a 3-1 win for the Lakers over the Pioneers at Webster Bank Arena.

SHU took the lead into the first intermission on a goal by Nick Curry (Augusta, GA) at 16:25 of the first.  Will Rayner (Needham, MA) won the possession battle along the far board, chipping it to Ben Ketchum (Greenwich, CT) who found Curry in the high slot.  He spun and wristed a shot through a screen for his first collegiate goal.

Mercyhurst scored twice in the second period, tying the game at 5:26 on a goal by Matthew Zay.  He drove wide down the near wing, cutting to the net and roofing a wrist shot set up by Chalie Carkin and Ryan Misiak.  The Lakers took the lead for good at 18:07, when Daniel Bahntge dove for a puck lying on the goal line following a save by Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) on a shot from Paul Chiasson.

The Pioneers outplayed the Lakers in the final period, generating chance after chance that Tibbett denied.  The Lakers made it a two-goal lead at 11:38 on a fluke goal by Tyler Shiplo, who drove the puck from the centerline that deflected off a SHU defenseman's stick into the top left corner of the net.

Sacred Heart is back in action Friday night at UConn.
