Pioneers Drop Heartbreaker to Rider 1-0 in Double Overtime

Box Score

Fairfield, Conn. – The Sacred Heart Field Hockey team lost in dramatic fashion to the Rider Broncs Friday evening, 1-0 in double overtime.  After both teams were held scoreless for the full 70 minutes of regulation and one overtime period, Rider's Gabby Burgo knocked one in seven minutes into the second overtime. The loss brings the Pioneers to 5-7 on the season and 0-2 against Northeast Conference opponents.

It was a midfield game in the first half as the teams exchanged posessions without any offensive surges. The Pioneers did outshoot Rider, but were held scoreless as the Broncs' goalkeeper Joelle Prettyman made two saves.

The Broncs' offense was in full force in the second half, outshooting Sacred Heart 10-4, but a strong Pioneer defense kept the score even at zero. The pattern continued through the first overtime period sending Sacred Heart and Rider into sudden death.

In the second overtime, Rider went on an offensive streak, maintaining possession of the ball for the majority. With 8:37 left in the period, the Broncs' Jackie Adams dished the ball to Gabby Burgo who pushed it in past SHU goalkeeper Mary Altepeter (Chesterfield, MO) for the only goal of the game and the win.

The Pioneers take to the field again Sunday in a matinee game against Monmouth at noon.
