Box Score (Erie, PA) – The Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team gave up six second period goals en route to a 9-1 loss to the Mercyhurst Lakers Friday night in the Pioneers' first game back after a 25-day semester break.
Trailing 1-0 going into the first intermission, the Pioneers surrendered a goal by Derek Elliot on a breakaway off a turnover for an unassisted goal 29 seconds into the period. Daniel Bahntge made it 3-0 with his first of three goals at 4:44 of the second.
However, it was on a five-minute power play when the Lakers ran away with the game, scoring four times in the first two minutes of a major penalty to Chad Barthelmess. Paul Chiasson scored off the faceoff four seconds into the man-advantage at 10:46, followed 50 seconds later by Bahntge's second goal. Tyler Shiplo added another at 12:29, and eleven seconds later Bahntge completed the hat trick to make it 7-0 Mercyhurst.
Daniel O'Donoghue tacked on a shorthanded goal at 4:39 of the third. Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB) put SHU on the board at 9:51, with Alex Stuart (Sauk Rapids, MN) and Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, MO) assisting. Nardo Nagzaam, who scored the game's first goal at 12:42 of the first, bookended his night with the game's final goal at 18:14 of the third.
Bahntge finished with an assist to go along with his hat trick for a four-point game, while Nagzaam added a helper two his two tallies for a three-point night. Kevin Noble and Grant Blakely both had three assists.
The Pioneers look to rebound Saturday night at 7:00 pm when they take on the Lakers again in the fianle of a two-game weekend series.
