Sacred Heart Edges Out Bryant, 4-3

Sacred Heart junior Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) help deliver the Pioneers a 4-3 win over Bryant, winning a three-set battle at #5 singles to clinch the match.  Downing beat Valeria Couto Cuervo 7-5 in the third set to give the Pioneers the match and their second win against a Northeast Conference team this season.

The Pioneers won the all important double point thanks to an 8-6 win at #3 by freshman Gabi Kaldan (New Brunswick, NJ) and junior Kristin Legenza (Berlin, CT) over Valeria Couto Cuervo and Stephanie Smyers.  Junior Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) and Downing defeated Irma Rodriguez-Lockwood and May Vickers at #2 doubles, 8-6.

Downing and Couto Cuervo spoit the first two sets of their singles match.  Downing won the first 6-2 and Couto Cuervo won the second 6-4 before Downing rebounded for a 7-5 win to seal the match for SHU.

Senior Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly, RI) beat Lucy Bird at #2 singles after losing the first set, 6-3.  She answered with a 6-2, 6-1 win.  Kaldan won at #3 over Smyers in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-0. 

The Pioneers return to action on their annual Spring Break Trip when they face South Dakota State, Mount St. Mary's, Seton Hall and St. John's in Orlando, FL.
