Men's Hockey Comeback Bid Falls Short at Holy Cross 6-4

Box Score

Worcester, MA- The Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team took to the road Saturday night for a matchup against the Crusaders of Holy Cross.  The Crusaders scored four second period goals to put the game out of reach for the Pioneers in a game they ultimately dropped by a score of 6-4.

The four second period goals, two of them scored by Jay Silva, were all scored within 10:38 of each other and allowed the Crusaders to have some breathing room heading into the second intermission up 5-1.

After a first period goal from Brandon Nunn, the Crusaders took little time to find the back of the net in the second period when Erik Vos scored 5:28 into the period.  Just 1:17 later, Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB) scored a power play goal to pull the Pioneers within one.  The Crusaders then went on their run, scoring three unanswered goals.  Goals by Jay Silva, Nunn, and Silva put Holy Cross up in a seemingly comfortable lead.

However, The Pioneers made a comeback run of their own in the third period, starting when 3:06 into the period Will Rayner (Newton, MA) scored his first career goal to cut the Crusaders lead to three.  Rayner's goal was followed by a power play goal from Ben Lake (Calgary, AB), also his first career goa, at 10:45. Drew George's first career goal with an extra attacker on brought Pioneers within one with 1:33 remaining in the period.  With the score 5-4, the Crusaders ended all hopes of a Pioneer comeback when Adam Schmidt put in an empty net goal with 1:05 to play.

Tonight marked the first time the Pioneers scored multiple times on a power play this season, going 2-6 on the man advantage.

The Pioneers fell to 0-10 overall and 0-6 in AHA play, while the Crusaders improved to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the AHA.  The Pioneers are back in action Wednesday night, when they travel up to in-state rival Connecticut for a 7:05 faceoff.
