WORCESTER, MA
(February 27, 2010) - Freshman Kaitlin O'Brien lit the lamp 52
seconds into overtime to give Holy Cross a 7-6 win over the Sacred
Heart University women's ice hockey team in the semifinal round of
the ECAC Open Tournament. With the loss, the Pioneers drop
to 7-17-1 on the season and will play against St. Michael's in
tomorrow's consolation at noon. The Hawks advance to the finals
where they will face the host, Holy Cross, at 4:00 pm.
Saint Anselm
jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from junior Kristen Byrne,
senior Maria Dougherty, and sophomore Molly Corl in the first
period. SHU answered
with goals by sophomore Nicole
Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT) and junior Lauren
Fontaine (Windsor, ON) to cut the lead to one by the end of the
frame.
With less than
seven minutes remaining in regulation SHU trailed 6-4 until
back-to-back goals by sophomore Caitlin
Gottwald (Reading, MA) and Fontaine (Windsor, ON) forced
overtime.
For the game,
Fontaine scored three times and added an assist. Senior Kate
Dunlop (Flesherton, ON) contributed a score and an
assist.
Byrne recorded a
pair of goals and a pair of assists for the Hawks.
In net for Saint
Anselm, sophomore Amy Zappen turned away 22 shot to earn the
win. Pioneers
sophomore Raelene
Sydor (St. Albert, AB) registered 29 saves.
