Baseball Drops Pair at Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, CT - On the heels of learning starting catcher Frank Bainer will be lost for the remainder of the season, the Sacred Heart baseball team managed just 11 hits in Saturday's doubleheader at the University of Hartford and dropped a pair of games, 4-3 and 3-2.

The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the opener on RBI singles by JJ Edwards and Tyler Santos in the top of the third. Hartford tied it with a pair of unearned runs off SHU starter Ryan Lynch in the bottom of the sixth.

Hartford, 5-10, took a 4-2 lead in the eighth with two runs off reliever Jared Balbach.

Sacred Heart, 1-19, got three hits in the ninth inning and got within a run with an RBI single by Phil Tantillo but were unable to push across the tying run. MJ Schiafano was retired to end the game on a comebacker to the pitcher with Pioneer runners at the corners.

The Pioneers took the lead in the nightcap as well when Tyler Santos blasted a solo homer in the top of the second. The Hawks tied it in the bottom of the fifth with a run off Pioneer starter Jack Wagoner.

Edwards gave SHU a 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the sixth inning that scored Matt Fitton who had reached on an error to start the inning.

Hartford, which only had three hits in the first six innings, got four straight in the seventh inning without recording an out to score a pair of runs and finish off the doubleheader sweep.
