Senior Michelle Panella (Marlboro, NJ) had two goals and an assist and five different Pioneers scored goals as Sacred Heart posted a 6-4 win over Holy Cross in women's ice hockey action Tuesday night at the Hart Center.
The first period remained scoreless until 7:30 into the game when Sacred Heart's Jenn Brager (East Greenwich, RI) scored on a power play to bring the Pioneers to a 1-0 lead. Junior Parny Ormiston answered back with a power play of her own at 16:02, with assists from sophomore Stephanie Couzin and senior Shara Conroy, to tie the game at 1-1. With 1:05 left in the first period Panella scored for Sacred Heart to reclaim the lead prior to heading into the locker rooms for the first break.
The Pioneer's carried their momentum from the first period through the break and got a quick goal 1:00 into the period by Brittany Rosselle (Pawling, NY), lengthening their lead to 3-1 over Holy Cross. The Crusaders battled back and scored three unanswered goals. The first of this run was 11:30 into the second period when freshman Kathryn O'Connor scored on a power play. Freshman Wendy Nobrega contributed another goal at 14:01 with another assist from Conroy, tying the score at 3-3. With 2:32 left in the period, junior Sam Rush netted the last goal of the stanza with help from Couzin to give the Crusaders their first lead of the night.
Sacred Heart returned from the second break with three goals in the third period while the Crusaders were held scoreless in the last twenty minutes of play. Sandy Parlato (Needham, MA) scored on a power play 2:17 into the last stanza, bringing the score to a tie for the third time in the contest. Katelin McLaughlin (Hingham, MA) netted a goal which give her team a 5-4 lead. With 9 seconds left in the game, Panella scored the final goal to bring the game to a score of 6-4 in favor of the Pioneers.
Sophomore goalie Jennifer Van Dongen (Calgary, Alb. Canada) was able to stop a total of 31 shots for the Crusaders. Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK) of Sacred Heart made 35 saves to help her team to a victory. Sophomores Whitney Dziama (Walpole, MA) and Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) each had two assists to spark the Pioneer attack.
The Pioneers are back in action Saturday afternoon when they host Rhode Island on Senior Day at the Wonderland of Ice. Face-off is set for 2:00 pm with pregame ceremonies honoring the Sacred Heart seniors also scheduled.
