Pioneers Sweep FDU

TEANECK, NJ - A Josh Enos (Paulsboro, NJ) grand slam highlighted a six-run sixth inning for Sacred Heart University in the opener of a doubleheader at Fairleigh Dickinson and led the Pioneers to a 9-5 victory. SHU completed the sweep with a 9-4 win in the nightcap thanks in part to a three-run jack by senior David Kaloyanides (Reading, MA).

In the opener, the Pioneers (22-28, 13-9 NEC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo homer by Pete Kandybowicz (Massapequa, NY). FDU evened the game in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by senior first baseman Ben Cass.

The Knights took their first lead of the game in the third - stringing together four hits to take a 4-3 edge. Junior right fielder Vincente Medina led off the fourth hammering the first pitch over the left-centerfield fence for his first collegiate home run, pushing the Knights ahead, 5-3.

Rob Tencza (Meriden, CT) led off the sixth for the Pioneers with an infield hit. He went to third on a throwing error by FDU starter John Meadus on an attempted pickoff. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Tony Diaz. With two outs, Jeff Hanson lined a pinch hit single to left. Rob Roy pinch ran for the ailing Hanson and went to second when Kaloyanides reached on a throwing error by the FDU shortstop.

Pete Kandybowicz singled to chase Roy home. Another FDU error allowed Bobby McKee to reach to load the bases, setting up the Enos grand slam to left field.

Junior Jay Monti picked up the win for the Pioneers to improve to 7-4. He struck out seven and walked one.

In game two, Sacred Heart took a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI double by Enos. He would later score on a passed ball. The Knights got one back in the third via a sacrifice fly from Matt Maher.

Kaloyanides hit his three-run homer in the fourth to give the Pioneers a 5-1 lead. Enos drove home another in the frame to make it 6-1.

FDU cut the deficit to 6-4 in the fifth inning but a two-run homer by Kandybowicz put the Pioneers back out in front 8-4 in the sixth. SHU tacked on another run in the seventh on a solo shot to center by Tencza.

Senior Chris Aldrich picked up the win for the Pioneers, going the distance for the sixth time this season.

The two teams will complete the three-game series on Saturday at noon.
