STORRS, CT (March 27, 2006) - The Sacred Heart men and women's tennis teams suffered matching 6-1 defeats at the hands of the University of Connecticut Monday afternoon in Storrs, Conn. The Pioneer men are now 2-7 while the women are even at 5-5 in dual match play this spring.
On the men's side, SHU's lone point came from sophomore Joseph Merendino (Bronx, NY) who handed Craig Helstowski a three-set defeat at #2 singles. Helstowski won the first set, 7-6, but Merendino rebounded to take the second set 7-6 and win in the super tiebreaker, 10-8.
For the women, senior Lauren Galatie (Monroe, CT) was the lone singles winner playing in her familiar #1 spot. Galatie notched a 6-4 win in set one but fell back in set two, 6-2. She fought her way to a 12-10 win in the super tiebreaker for the win.
The Pioneers are back on the courts on Wednesday with the men heading to the University of Rhode Island and women off to Siena College.
