Milford, CT -
Junior Kendall Junta scored the game winning goal 3:05 into the third period and Saint Anslem hung on to defeat Sacred Heart 3-2 in women's hockey action Tuesday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The loss snapped the Pioneers seven game winning streak and eight game unbeaten streak.
Junta's game winner came on a rush that was started by senior Danielle Campbell. Campbell fired a pass up ice to sophomore Lindsay Snow. Snow carried the puck nearly to the goal line and then dropped it back to Junta, who popped the puck into an open left side of the net, past Pioneer goaltender Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK).
The Hawks controlled most of the game offensively, out shooting the Pioneers 42-30. Boulay made 39 saves to keep the Pioneers close in the game.
The Pioneers got on the board first when junior Michelle Panella (Marlboro, NJ) netted her 15th goal of the season 8:17 into the game. Freshman Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) threw a puck towards the front of the net and Panella was there to deflect it past Hawks goaltender Andrea Berlin to put the Pioneers up 1-0.
Sophomore Cindy Lebel tied the game for Saint Anselm with a shorthanded goal with 1:49 left in the opening period. Lebel took a cross ice pass from Campbell and flipped it past Boulay to even the score. It was Lebel's eighth goal of the season and extended her team leading point total to 22.
The Pioneers went back on top 2:01 into the middle period when sophomore Whitney Dziama (Walpole, MA) scored her third goal of the year. Defenseman Devon Gaslin (Augusta, ME) carried the puck around the net and flipped a pass in front to Dziama who immediately poked it into the net to put Sacred Heart up 2-1.
With 11:08 left in the middle period, the Hawks tied the game again on a goal by Campbell. As Junta took the puck behind the Pioneer net, Campbell set up in front and one-timed a pass from Junta past Boulay.
The Pioneers (9-9-3) are back in action Friday night when they host RPI. Game time at the Milford Ice Pavilion is set for 7:00 pm.
