Milford, CT -
Sacred Heart scored three second period goals and junior Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK) made 24 saves in net as the Pioneers held off Saint Anselm 4-2 in women's hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
The Pioneers (4-7-2) are now unbeaten in five of their last six games. The loss was the first of the year for the Hawks, stopping their winning streak at 12 games overall, dating back to last year.
Saint Anselm dominated the first period, outshooting the Pioneers 9-5. However, Freshman Kristina Feltz (Edison, NJ) put the Pioneers on the board first with just 7 seconds left in the period. After Michelle Panella (Marlboro, NJ) won a faceoff back to Feltz, she let a shot fly from the blue line that just trickled through the pads of Hawks goaltender Andrea Berlin. It was the third goal of the season for the rookie.
The Pioneers came out firing in the second period, scoring three goals in a nine-minute span to open up a 4-0 lead. Junior Michelle Panella gave the Pioneers a two goal lead 2:37 into the period when she took a feed from sophomore Katelin McLaughlin (Hingham, MA) and popped the puck into the net for her ninth of the season.
Freshman Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) scored her team leading 10th goal of the season at the 8:19 mark when she tipped home a rebound. After Berlin made a save on the initial shot by senior Nicole Farrelly (Windsor, CT), Arnone was there to clean up the leftovers for the eventual game winner.
Just 36 seconds after Arnone's goal, freshman Alexis Dedousis (Scotch Plains, NJ) scored the first goal of her career to put the Pioneers up by 4. After taking a pass from sophomore Sarah Hickman (Amherst, MA), Dedousis flipped a shot into the left corner of net.
The Hawks attempted to build a comeback by scoring two goals of their own in a four minute span. Sophomore Cindy Lebel scored her team leading fifth goal of the season at the 10:04 mark to put the Hawks on the board. Just over four minutes later, with the Hawks on the power play, sophomore Arden Lyons poked home a rebound to cut the lead to 4-2, but that's as close as Saint Anselm would get.
The Hawks outshot the Pioneers 26-20, but Boulay was solid all night, turning in what was easily her best performance of the year.
The Pioneers are back in action Sunday afternoon when they visit Boston University. Face-off is set for 2:00 pm.
