Final Stats
ORONO, ME (January 10, 2004) - The Sacred Heart University men's
ice hockey team fell at #4 Maine 6-0. Jeff Mushaluk scored the only
goal the Black Bears needed at 1:01 of the first period. Maine out
shot the Pioneers 33-11 in the game.
The Pioneers found themselves down 1-0 early in the first period
when the Black Bears stole the puck in Sacred Heart's zone and
converted as Mushaluk buried a pass from Michel Leveille.. Mike
Hamilton was also credited with an assist.
The two teams traded power plays shortly after the goal was
score, but neither team was able to convert with the man-advantage
despite a number of scoring opportunities.
The Pioneers were out shot 11-1 in the opening period, but
trailed just 1-0 on the scoreboard. Sacred Heart had seven shots
that did not make it on net in the period.
The Black Bear went on the power play twice in the first five
minutes of the second period and made it a 2-0 game after Todd
Jackson scored on the second of those opportunities at 5:13 from
Dustin Penner and Colin Shields.
The scored was 4-0 when Keith Johnson closed out the scoring in
the middle frame as he made it a 5-0 Maine lead with his fifth goal
of the season. Johnson also assisted on an earlier goal from
Cameron Layll.
The Black Bears tacked on one more goal from Penner in the third
period to make it a 6-0 win over the Pioneers.
Frank Doyle made 11 saves in recording his 10th win and third
shutout of the season while LaPointe made 27 saves in net for
Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers will be back in the ice when they host Canisius for
a weekend series on January 16th at 7:00 pm and on January 17th at
5:00 pm. Both games will be played at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
