Bentley Downs Men's Ice Hockey in MAAC Quarterfinals, 2-0

March 15, 2003

MILFORD, CT (March 15, 2003) - The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team lost to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent, Bentley College, 2-0, in the MAAC Quarterfinals. Falcon junior Joe Lovell (Norwood, MA) netted the eventual game-winner on the power play at 4:55 in the second period.

Lovell opened the scoring after a close, but scoreless first period from freshmen Paul Markarian (Quincy, MA) and Ryan Mayhew (Owatonna, MN). Lovell one-timed a shot past Pioneer senior goaltender Eddy Ferhi (Charenton, France) off a cross-ice pass from Markarian. At 11:43, Falcon freshman Ryan Lessnau (Southfield, MI) redirected a shot from freshman Jake Plattner (Millersville, MD) past Ferhi to increase the score, 2-0.

The third period remained scoreless, after a Pioneer goal was disallowed for being hit with a high stick.

Ferhi made 29 saves in the contest. Falcon sophomore goaltender Simon St. Pierre became the third goalie to earn a shut-out in MAAC Tournament history, and earned the first ever in the quarterfinals. St. Pierre stopped all 28 Pioneer shots.

Bentley advances to the MAAC Semifinals to be held March 21st, at Tate Rink in West Point, NY.
