ERIE, PA (February 14, 2003) - The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Mercyhurst College, 8-3. Junior Marc-Andre Fournier (St. Nicholas, QUE) recorded a hat trick in the win, including the game-winning goal.
Fournier opened the scoring at 3:29 in the first period on the power play from sophomore Garrett Larson (Rycroft, AB) and senior Les Hrapchak (Wakaw, SK). Larson increased the Pioneers lead to 2-0 heading in to the second period with a power play goal, assisted by seniors Martin Paquet (Ste. Catherine, QUE) and Konn Hawkes (Watrous, SK) at 11:25.
Mercyhurst cut the lead in half at 1:35 in the second with a goal by Erik Johnson. Sophomore Ryan Bremner (Williams Lake, BC) put the Pioneers up again at 3:41, assisted by sophomore Barclay Folk (Westbank, BC) and senior Richard Naumann (Boerne, TX). Fournier added his second of the night at 8:46, assisted by freshman Peter Giatrelis (Hamden, CT) and junior Mike Reagan (Flin Flon, MB). Laker Preston Briggs cut the Pioneers lead in half with a goal just 13 seconds later. Senior Michael Forsland (Anchorage, AK) tallied a short-handed goal, assisted by Reagan, at 11:01 in the second, followed by a goal from Paquet at 12:44 to make the score 6-2 headed into the third period.
Conrad Martin put the Lakers on the board first in the third period at 5:28. Naumann answered at 10:36 from Bremner and junior Chuck Metcalfe (Edmonton, AB). Fournier tallied his hat trick goal to close out the scoring at 15:03 on the power play.
Senior Eddy Ferhi (Charenton, France) made 26 saves in the win, while Laker goaltenders Andy Franck and Ryan Kobel split the game with Kobel recording the loss. Franck made 20 saves and Kobel stopped 13 Pioneer shots.
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow, February 15th, as they face off against Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA at 7 pm.
