MILFORD, CT (November 25, 2003) - The Sacred Heart University
men's ice hockey team won their thid straight home game and their
fourth win out of five games after defeating Atlantic Hockey
leading Holy Cross 2-1 in the final game of the regular season
between these two teams.
Sophomore Peter Giatrelis
(Wallingford, CT) scored the game-winning goal at 17:17 of the
first period as the Pioneers held on for the win and improved to
4-7-0 on the season and 4-4-0 against conference opponents.
The Pioneers opened the scoring at 7:56 of the first period when
freshman Peter
Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) scored his fourth goal of the
season after he roofed a rebound from fellow freshman Pierre-Luc
O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) over the glove of Holy Cross goaltender
Tony Quesada. O'Brien was credited with an assist on the goal.
Sacred Heart went up 2-0 on the goal by Giatrelis as he buried a
pass from sophomore Andrew
Billinghurst (Fort Collins, CO) for his fourth goal of the
season. Billinghurst and junior Barclay Folk
(Westbank, BC) assisted on the goal.
That lead stood until 11:00 of the third period when R.J. Irving
got the Crusaders on the board with his second goal of the season
and was assisted by Andrew McKay and Blair Bartlett. That was as
close as Holy Cross would get as the Pioneers hung on for the 2-1
win.
Junior goaltender Kevin LaPointe
(Quebec, QC) made 34 saves for the Pioneers while Tony Quesada made
29 saves in net fore the Crusaders. Both goalies were the reason
the score was only 2-1 as both made spectacular saves to keep the
game close.
Sacred Heart will be back in action next weekend when they open
a home and home series at Bentley on December 5th at 7:00 pm. The
two teams will play again the following night at 7:00 pm at the
Milford Ice Pavilion for the final game of the regular season
between the two teams.
