MEN'S ICE HOCKEY DEFEATS BENTLEY, 5-2

WALTHAM, MA (November 12, 2002) - The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Bentley, 5-2 on the road. The Pioneers took an early lead off a goal by senior Les Hrapchak (Wakaw, SK) at 5:40 in the first period.

Bentley tied the scored up at 16:36 in the first on a goal by Paul Markarian. SHU regained the lead with just over a minute to play in the period with a short-handed goal from senior Martin Paquet (St. Catherine, QUE).

The second period was all Sacred Heart as senior Lloyd Tennant (Billings, MT) scored the gamewinner at 8:52 assisted by freshman Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI). Freshman Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburgh, PA) closed out the period scoring at 18:05, assisted by freshmen Molinaro and Erik Roos (Milford, CT).

The Pioneers had a 4-1 lead going into the third period, but Bentley cut the lead in half on a goal by Joe Lovell at 4:40. The Pioneers would net one more at 18:37 from sophomore Brad McFaul (Calgary, AB) with assists by Chmiel and sophomore Garrett Larson (Rycroft, AB).

Pioneer sophomore goaltender Kevin LaPointe (Quebec City, QUE) earned the win, making 33 saves. Bentley goaltender Simon St. Pierre recorded 25 saves in the contest.

The Pioneers return to action in the MAAC challenge at Harbor Yard Arena Friday, November 15th, as they face-off against UConn at 5 pm.
