Steve Bergin

Steve Bergin, in his second stint with the Sacred Heart Hockey Team, is a former collegiate player who has pro hockey coaching experience.

Bergin returned to SHU in 2022 after serving as an assistant coach of the Hershey Bears, an American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Washington Capitals during the 2021 season. The Bears finished tied for fourth in the Atlantic Division and qualified for the Calder Cup playoffs.

Prior to his first stint at SHU, the 2020-21 season, he was the head coach of the South Carolina Stingrays, the Capitals' ECHL affiliate. Bergin was named ECHL Coach of the Year for the 2019-20 season when he led the Stingrays to a 44-14-4 record, including a 25-5-4 road mark that are second most road wins in ECHL history. The Stingrays also led the ECHL in team defense, allowing a league-low of 2.37 goals per game, and tied for the best winning percentage in the league.
 
The Groton, Mass., native skated for the University of Connecticut from 2007 to 2011 and was team captain his senior year. He went on to play minor league hockey for five seasons.
 
Bergin's responsibilities at SHU include recruiting, working with the team's defensemen, running the penalty kill, assisting in practice and game-planning and quarterbacking all video operations.
