Sacred Heart University

Ben Batchelder is in his 17th year at Sacred Heart University. Batchelder was recently promoted to Associate Head Athletic Trainer and works directly with the football and equestrian teams. In his first five years at Sacred Heart, he worked with the field hockey, women’s basketball, and wrestling programs.

Batchelder received his undergraduate degree from Northeastern University in May 2005. During his time at Northeastern, he gained a variety of athletic training experiences working with the football and women's basketball teams among others. He also completed a number of internships within Northeastern's co-operative education program at Metrowest Medical Center, Disney's Wide World of Sports and the New England Patriots.

Batchelder completed his Master's of Science in Recreation and Sports Sciences at Ohio University in 2006. While at Ohio, he worked as the Head Athletic Trainer at Wellston High School, in Wellston, Ohio. His research project was published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research as the lead author entitled, "Gastrointestinal Temperature Increases and Hypohydration Exists After Collegiate Men’s Ice Hockey Participation.”

During his time here in Fairfield, he has taken on a number of administrative responsibilities in addition to his clinical work. He is the Drug Testing Program Administrator, and oversees all aspects of the program as the contact for NCAA Drug Free Sport. He oversees the hiring process for all intern and graduate assistant athletic trainers at SHU, and has created a mentorship program for these young professionals. His professional interest in concussions have allowed him to be part of creating and modifying the concussion policy and procedure manual, done annually.

He also serves as an Approved Clinical Instructor for the University's undergraduate and graduate athletic training programs.

Batchelder is a native of Simsbury, Conn. and currently resides in Monroe with his wife, Ashley, and their two sons, Jackson (8) and Caleb (3).
