Women's Rugby Wins Chargers 7s Tournament

NEW HAVEN, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University women's rugby team won the New Haven Chargers 7s Tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers went 3-1 to secure the first-place finish.

Game 1 (W, 31-5) – SHU vs New Haven
Sacred Heart opened the day with a dominant 35-5 over the hosts, University of New Haven. 
 
Game 2 (L, 22-17) – SHU vs AIC
The Pioneers fell in the second game of the day, 22-17 to AIC. Viola Koning started the scoring as SHU took a 5-0 lead. However, AIC answered to tie it up 5-5. The Pios added another score to take a 10-5 edge heading into halftime. 

In the second half, Sacred Heart led 17-15 but the Yellow Jackets scored a try and made a conversion to come-from-behind in the final minutes and take a 22-17 win over the Pioneers. 

Game 3 (W, 21-19) – SHU vs Army 
Sacred Heart defeated Army in a very close game, 21-19 to determine final seedings. The Pioneers scored first and had a good conversion to take a 7-0 advantage. However, Army jumped ahead 14-7 heading into halftime. 

In the second half, Julia Arnone scored a try, and SHU made its conversion to tie the game at 14-14. Erin Croke went the distance to score a try and the Pios had another good conversion to take a 21-14 lead. Army scored a try but did not connect on the conversion as SHU took the 21-19 victory and a spot against the Black Knights in the finals. 

Game 4 (W, 31-5) – SHU vs Army 
The Pioneers had a dominating showing in the New Haven Chargers 7s final. Sarah Gray scored one try, Arnone added two and Koning had a good conversion as the Pioneers jumped out to a 17-0 lead at the half. 

Army was able to get on the board in the second frame, but Sacred Heart continued to dominate, scoring 14 more points, including tries from Gray and Megan Chura, to take the 31-5 final and tournament victory.
