Men's Basketball Travels to Manhattan on Thursday

SHU kicks off its final weekend of regular season play

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Following a pair of home wins last weekend, the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team will conclude the regular season with two road games. The Pios will kick off their final regular season weekend at Manhattan on Thursday, March 6, at 7 pm.

Opening Tip:

  • Sacred Heart and Manhattan close out the season series on Thursday evening. The Pioneers defeated the Jaspers 74-72 at home on Feb. 2. The two teams are currently tied for sixth place in the MAAC.
  • The Pioneers are coming off two home victories over Marist (67-54) and Fairfield (83-62) over the weekend. 
  • Bryce Johnson averaged 20 ppg and 8 rpg in the 2-0 week. He became the SHU DI rebounds leader with his seventh rebound against Fairfield on Sunday. Griffin Barrouk (17), Nyle Ralph-Beyer (16), and Tanner Thomas (11) also scored in double figures over the Stags. 
  • Three Pioneers are averaging double figures: Thomas (14.8), Anquan Hill (12.8), and Amiri Stewart (12.0). 
  • Thomas is the team leader in rebounds with 6.4, followed by Bryce Johnson (5.9) and Hill (5.3).
  • Mekhi Conner is 10th in the nation with 190 assists and assists per game, with 6.6 this season.
  • Sacred Heart's 9.5 three-pointers per game is 41st in the country. 
  • Thomas was named to the All-MAAC preseason third team. 
  • This is Sacred Heart's first season as a full-time member of the MAAC.
  • The Pioneers have 10 new players on the team. 
  • Head Coach Anthony Latina is in his 12th season as head coach and 20th year overall with the Pioneers. 

Last Time Out:

  • Sacred Heart defeated Fairfield at home on Sunday afternoon, 83-62, wrapping up a 2-0 weekend in the Pitt Center.
  • Johnson (18) led four players in double figures with 18 points, Barrouk (17), Ralph-Beyer (16), Thomas (11).
  • Johnson became the SHU DI rebounds leader with 760 in his career.
  • Sacred Heart led by as many as 19 in the first half, thanks to a three-point buzzer-beater for Taj Bryant.
  • The Pios jumped ahead by as many as 30 in the second half. From 8:24-1:18 in the second half, SHU held a 27-point or more advantage.
  • Johnson went 8-for-12 from the field en route to his 18-point performance and was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine. 
  • Barrouk had an outstanding day off the bench, shooting 60% (6-10) from the field and going 5-for-8 from three-point range.
  • The Pioneers hit 11 triples as a team and shot 49.3% (33-67) from the field. SHU dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Stags 41-28.

About Manhattan: 

  • Manhattan and Sacred Heart are currently tied for sixth place in the MAAC with a 10-8 conference record and 15-12 overall.
  • The Jaspers are coming off two straight road wins last weekend in the Western New York trip (77-71) over Canisius and (85-70) over Niagara.
  • Five players are averaging double figures, led by Will Sydnor with 14.5.
  • Manhattan's offense is second in the league (75.8).
