Pios Complete Late Rally to Defeat Manhattan

Gavin Donohue delivers a three-run home run and a two-run double

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University baseball team defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent, Manhattan University, Friday afternoon, 9-6, with a late rally beginning with a three-run home run from Gavin Donohue.

How it Happened:
After a few quiet early innings, the Jaspers struck first in the top of the fourth adding two runs. With two outs and two runners on, Tyler Hansen tripled to left field plating both runners.
 
Manhattan added another in the fifth with a sacrifice fly-out to take the 3-0 lead.
 
The Pioneer's late rally came with a three-run home run from Gavin Donohue in the bottom of the seventh to tie things up.
 
Sacred Heart continued with the momentum in the seventh. With two runners on, Chuck Tallman singled to first base plating Peter Link. Then with bases loaded, Zack Kovalchik worked a walk to plate JW Fitzgerald. Tallying his second hit of the game, G. Donohue doubled down the right line plating his brother, Ronan Donohue, and Tallman. The Pios didn't stop there as Dante D'Amore singled up to middle plating both G. Donohue and Kovalchik for the 9-3 lead.
 
The Jaspers, desperate for a comeback, added three more in the top of the eighth but fell short, 9-6.
 
PJ Rogan secured the save for the Pios to get them out of nineth inning tabbing his third save of the year.
 
Joey Trombley pitched a career high of seven innings while striking out four batters.
 
Up Next
The Pios return to Veterans Park for game two against the Jaspers for a 1 p.m. start time.
