A Late Pio Rally Falls Short to Yale, 9-5

Tallman led SHU going 3-4 at the plate

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University baseball team fell at Yale in a midweek matchup, 9-5. After trailing 9-0 in the fifth, the Pioneers rallied in the sixth and seventh but were unable to bridge the gap. Chuck Tallman led the Pios at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

How it Happened:
Yale struck first in the opening inning, tacking on two runs with a triple and a Pio error.
 
With bases loaded and no outs in the third, a pair of sacrifice flies and a wild pitch plated three Bulldogs to build a 5-0 lead.
 
Yale added four in the fifth with two RBI singles and a fielder's choice.
 
Chuck Tallman helped the Pios respond in the fifth with an out and bases loaded as he sent a hit into the gap for an RBI single. Ronan Donohue added another run with a fielder's choice, plating Steak Newman. With bases loaded and two outs, Zack Kovalchik took a hit to the leg as Peter Link crossed home.
 
Kovalchik made his second diving grab of the game at center in the bottom of the sixth to get out of the inning, keeping the deficit at six, 9-3.
 
SHU came back to add two in the seventh with a bunt from Tallman. The bunt was sent down the left line and the throw to first was off which plated two Pioneers to close the gap, 9-5.
 
Ultimately, the Pioneers were unable to bridge the gap, falling 9-5.
 
SHU finished the last few innings unscathed with the help of right-handed pitchers Matt Longo and Spencer Nicely – each securing their first career appearances and strikeouts.
 
Gavin Donohue extended his hitting streak to six games with a base hit in the sixth inning.

The Pioneers open up home play against Saint Peter's for a conference series beginning Friday at 3:00 p.m.
