Army Rides Major Penalty to 5-3 Win

Pios Get Goals From Three Players

2/8/2025 6:39:00 PM

Box Score WEST POINT, N.Y. – It's hard to win on the road when you allow three power play goals against a hot team that is riding an emotional senior weekend with packed houses. That's what the Sacred Heart Men's Hockey Team faced today in a 5-3 loss to Army at Tate Rink.

The Black Knights converted three of six advantages, including a pair on a five-minute major, to overcome a 1-0 deficit with three straight scores. Army withstood a SHU comeback to tie the game late with two more tallies to put it away.

Reid Pabich, a junior winger who skated for Maine last season, came close a couple of times last night in the 2-2 OT tie but couldn't find the net. He got the Pios started today with a one-timer just 4:03 into the game. Captain John Jaworski moved the puck behind the net across to Felix Trudeau, who had two assists last night and saw Pabich (11th goal) cutting to the net. The pass hit him in stride at the middle of the slot for a shot that went inside the right post.

It looked as if that tally might stand for the rest of the period, which had both teams with nine shots on goal, until the Black Knights jumped on a SHU turnover to tie the game with 28 seconds remaining.

Both sides had advantage chances without success early in the second. However, the most significant call came eight minutes through the frame when Gabe Blanchard took a major penalty. Army immediately found the net to make it 2-1 and then increased the lead to two with 1:16 left in the major, which was abbreviated due to a home team penalty. The only Army shots on goal on the power play hit the net.

Rookie Pio goalie Ajeet Gundarah kept his squad within a pair by making some big stops the rest of the way in the second, leading to a Pio tally that cut the margin to 3-2.

Sophomore wing Jake Hewitt grabbed the puck in his own end and sent a lead pass to first year linemate Charles Tardif, who skated into the offensive zone and cut to the middle with defenders all over him. He found his trailer in Mikey Adamson, the junior blueliner who was looking to increase his goal streak to three games. Adamson took a few strides and then whizzed a wrist shot within a few inches of Army goalie JT Cataldo's left ear for his 10th of the year.

The only two-goal lead of the weekend (until the empty netter) didn't sustain the home team. Jaworski flicked in a shot over a sprawled Cataldo with 5:43 left to even things at three, but Army answered quickly to take the lead again. Gundarah was pulled with 1:55 left and the Pios eventually set up their offense with under a minute to play before Max Dorrington was whistled for interference and the Black Knights potted a long shot into an empty net.
