Men's Basketball Opens Buffalo, NY Trip With Canisius on Thursday

SHU will face Canisius for the second time this month

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart men's basketball team will travel to Buffalo, N.Y., this week for a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) games. The Pioneers will kick off the trip with Canisius on Thursday, January 23 at 7:00 pm in the Koessler Athletic Center.

OPENING TIP
  • Sacred Heart and Canisius meet for the second time this season. The Pioneers defeated the Golden Griffs at home, 99-82 on January 5. 
  • Six Pioneers scored in double figures in their last meeting, and Tanner Thomas and Anquan Hill recorded double-doubles. Griffin Barrouk (19), Amiri Stewart (13), Mekhi Conner (10), and Bryce Johnson (10) scored in double figures. SHU had 10 three-pointers and shot 53.6% from the field. 
  • Canisius is coming off a 78-67 road win at Fairfield, while SHU lost at home, 66-61, to Saint Peter's on Saturday. 
  • Three Pioneers scored in double figures against Saint Peter's. Amiri Stewart (21), Anquan Hill (13), and Tanner Thomas (10). Stewart also recorded his 1,000th career point on Saturday. 
  • Three Pioneers are averaging double figures: Thomas (15.5), Stewart (12.1), and Hill (11.2). 
  • Bryce Johnson leads the team in rebounds with 6.1 per game, followed by Thomas (5.5) and Hill (4.6). 
  • Conner is the team leader in assists (5.1) & Stewart (2.0) in steals.
  • Thomas was named to the All-MAAC preseason third team. 
  • This year is Sacred Heart's first season as a full-time member of the MAAC.
  • The Pioneers have 10 new players on the team. 
  • Head Coach Anthony Latina is in his 12th season as head coach and 20th year overall with the Pioneers. 
LAST TIME OUT
  • Senior guard Amiri Stewart tallied his 1,000th career point, leading SHU with 21 points in its 66-61 home loss to Saint Peter's. He went 5-for-9 from the field and 10-for-13 from the free throw line.
  • Anquan Hill (13) and Tanner Thomas (10) also added double-figure performances for the Pioneers. Hill was almost perfect from three-point range, going 4-for-5.
  • After a four-point edge for Saint Peter's, Griffin Barrouk sparked a 7-0 run for the Pios to come from behind and take a three-point lead, 22-19. Throughout the following six minutes, neither team led by more than one before Saint Peter's was able to break a 24-24 tie and go on an 8-0 run for a 32-24 edge at the half.
  • SHU never took a lead in the second half but pulled within three multiple times in the second half.
ABOUT CANISIUS  
  • Canisius has gone 2-2 since its last meeting against the Pioneers. The Golden Griffins are 2-16 overall and 2-5 in the MAAC. They defeated Rider 85-67 at home and then beat Fairfield on the road, 78-67. 
  • Paul McMillan IV leads the team in scoring 20.0 points per game, followed by Tana Kopa with 13.0. 
  • Cam Palesse is the team leader in rebounds at 5.1 rpg.
