Men's Basketball Travels to Mount St. Mary's on Sunday

SHU returns to the road after three straight home games

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University men's basketball team will travel to Mount St. Mary's after a three-game home stand, on Sunday, January 12, at 2:00 pm. The Pioneers will play just their second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) road game.

OPENING TIP

  • Sacred Heart and Mount St. Mary's meet for the first time since 2022 during both team's stint in the NEC. This Sunday's matchup will be the 45th overall. SHU is 15-29 all-time in the series with Mount. 
  • The Pioneers will jump back on the road after three straight home games.
  • Sacred Heart is coming off a close 66-65 loss to Merrimack on Friday for their second MAAC loss. Anquan Hill led three Pioneers in double figures with 17 points, along with Tanner Thomas (15) and Bryce Johnson (10).
  • Thomas was named this week's MAAC Player of the Week for the second time this season.
  • As a team, SHU's three-point percentage, 38.48%, is ranked 24th nationally amongst Division I men's basketball teams (as of 1/9) 
  • Amiri Stewart is 43rd in the NCAA DI in steals per game at 2.08 (as of 1/9).
  • Three Pioneers are averaging double figures: Thomas (13.7), Hill (12.6, and Stewart (11.9).
  • Bryce Johnson leads the team in rebounds with 6.1 per game, followed by Hill (5.3) and Thomas (5.2). 
  • Mekhi Conner is the team leader in assists (5.2) & Stewart (2.0) in steals (43rd in the nation)
  • Thomas was named to the All-MAAC preseason third team. 
  • This year is Sacred Heart's first season as a full-time member of the MAAC.
  • The Pioneers have 10 new players on the team. 
  • Head Coach Anthony Latina is in his 12th season as head coach and 20th year overall with the Pioneers. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • On Friday, Anquan Hill led three players in double figures with 17 points in SHU's 66-65 home loss to Merrimack.
  • Tanner Thomas (15) and Bryce Johnson (10) also scored in double digits for the Pios.
  • Sacred Heart overcame an 11-point deficit, scoring eight straight points in the final 3:08 left to play.
  • The Pioneers were unable to connect on an inbound play for one final shot to win the game as time expired.

ABOUT THE MOUNT  

  • Mount St. Mary's is 3-1 in MAAC play, coming off a road win over Manhattan on Friday.
  • The Mountaineers have three players averaging double figures, Dallas Hobbs (13.1), Terrell Ard Jr. (12.0), and Dola Adebayo (11.5). Ard Jr. leads the team in rebounds (7.5)  
  • MSM offense is 3rd in the MAAC (72.8) and 3rd in FG% at 43.5%.
