Women's Volleyball Ends Black Knights Invite with Loss at Army

The Pioneers won the opening set this afternoon

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team won the opening set against Army in its final match of the Black Knights Invitational on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Black Knights by a 3-1 final score. 

Allison Murray led the way for the Pioneers with 14 kills and 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. Miliani Villarreal and Camryn Luginbuhl also finished with double-digit digs with 14 and 11, respectively. Luginbuhl was close to a double-double with nine kills. Gaby Zovko had a strong match with 25 assists.

How It Happened:
With the score tied at 8-8, the Pioneers started to pull away in the first set with a 6-0 run. Murray took over in the set with four kills in the surge, including a kill to make it 14-8 Pioneers. 

SHU held the lead for the remainder of the first, with the Black Knights getting as close as one, 20-19. The two teams traded points for the remainder of the frame, as the Pios secured the win on a Murray kill, settling the score at 25-23. 

The second set was also close, with Army taking a 25-22 win. Both teams traded short runs for most of the frame, with the Black Knights building a 24-20 lead late. The Pios scored two straight to cut the margin to two, but Army held on to tie the match. 

Unfortunately for Sacred Heart, Army used its new momentum to take the next two sets. The Black Knights took the third 25-18 and the fourth 25-15 to secure the four-set win.

SHU heads to Palmetto State next, beginning with a Friday, Sept. 20, contest against Norfolk State at 10 a.m. to open a tournament at Charleston Southern.
