Softball Suffers Pair of Losses at Spring Games Sunday

Bender hit her first career home run in the opener

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Sacred Heart University softball team dropped a pair of games at the Spring Games on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers fell 10-2 to UAlbany in the opener and 3-0 to Southern Indiana in the second contest.

Team Records
Sacred Heart (4-7)
UAlbany (5-4)
Southern Indiana (5-9)

Game 1: UA 10, SHU 2 (6 inn.)
Pitchers:
Kowalski, Sam (SHU) - (L, 3.0 innings pitched, 8 earned runs, 2 strikeouts, 3-3 record)
Jenna Pfister (SHU) - (2.2 innings pitched, 2 earned runs)
Dominique Prevette (UA) - (W, 4.0 innings pitched, 2 earned runs, 1 strikeout, 1-1 record)
Wendi Hammond (UA) - (2.0 innings pitched, 0 earned runs)

Top Performers:
Cierra Bender (SHU) – 1-2, 2 RBIs, 1 run, 1 home run

Of Note:
The Great Danes stormed out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning.

SHU answered in the top of the third, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Cierra Bender provided the offense with a two-run homer to left field that plated Jenna Mowad. Bender's homer is the first for the first year infielder.

Unfortunately for the Pioneers, a five-run third for UAlbany proved too much to overcome. The Great Danes went on to take the game by a 10-2 final score in six innings.

Game 2: USI 3, SHU 0
Pitchers:
Emily Heath (SHU) - (L, 7.0 innings pitched, 3 earned runs, 5 strikeouts, 1-3 record)
Josie Newman (USI) - (W, 7.0 innings pitched, 0 earned runs, 15 strikeouts, 5-4 record)

Top Performers:
Sam Kowalski (SHU) – 1-3
Emily Carroll (SHU) – 1-3

Of Note:
Following a scoreless first inning, the Screaming Eagles got on the scoreboard first with a two-run second.

After the second, the pitchers' duel resumed, as neither team scored again until the top of the fifth. USI added another run to its lead to go ahead 3-0.

The Pioneers had chances to hang some runs on the board, tallying leadoff singles in the first, fifth and seventh innings, but ended up empty-handed in a 3-0 setback. Screaming Eagles' starter Josie Newman was feeling it this afternoon, as she allowed no runs with three hits and 15 strikeouts.

Emily Heath also pitched well today, ceding just three earned runs over 7.0 innings with seven hits and five strikeouts.

Up Next
The Pioneers will be off until Wednesday, March 6, to play Western Michigan and Florida Gulf Coast at FGCU. SHU will play the Broncos at 2 p.m. and the Eagles at 7 p.m.
