Men's Basketball Heads to Saint Francis

SHU will be on the road for two straight games

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fresh off its third straight win, the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team will travel to Saint Francis on Thursday, January 25, at 7:00 pm, the first of two games on the road. The Pioneers are coming off a big home victory over Wagner on Sunday, where Joey Reilly had his third consecutive 20+ point game to lead the Pios.

LAST TIME OUT:

  • Sacred Heart won its third consecutive NEC game on Sunday against Wagner, taking down the Seahawks 66-61 at home. 
  • Reilly scored a game-high 21 points en route to his third straight 20+ point performance. 
  • Alex Sobel scored 14 points for SHU while adding five rebounds, two blocks, and two assists. 
  • Aidan Carpenter added 12 points for the Pioneers for his third consecutive game in double figures.  
  • With the win, the Pioneers moved into a tie for first place in the NEC. 

OPENING TIP:

  • Sacred Heart and Saint Francis wrap up the season series. The Pioneers opened NEC play with a 79-67 victory over the Red Flash on January 4. This will be the 44th meeting of the two teams. 
  • Sacred Heart is 4-1 in Northeast Conference play, sitting in first place with CCSU. SHU has wins over Saint Francis, LIU, and Wagner at home and Le Moyne on the road. The lone loss came on the road at Merrimack.
  • Three active Pioneers are averaging in double figures: Nico Galette (14.1), Sobel (11.7), and Reilly (11.7). Sobel leads the team in rebounds (7.3), and Galette is second with 6.1 rpg.
  • Sobel is fifth in the nation in blocks with 53 (as of 1/23) and is sixth in blocks per game with 2.79. 
  • SHU has four active 1,000-point scorers, which is tied for the third most in the NCAA.
  • Reilly, Galette, and Tanner Thomas have brought in NEC Player of the Week awards for the Pioneers this season. Sobel has been a Prime Performer three times. 
  • Galette, Reilly, and Kyle McGee were voted captains for 2023-24.
  • SHU was selected first in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Galette and Reilly were selected to the All-NEC preseason team.
