HAMILTON, N.Y. (September 1, 2023) – First-year
Madelyn Kidd (Hillsborough, N.J.) made a statement with her first two collegiate goals on Friday afternoon. The first erased a 2-1, third-quarter deficit on the road, and the second stood as the game-winner in the fourth quarter at Tyler's Field, as the Sacred Heart University field hockey team rallied for a 4-2 win at Colgate.
Isabelle Chamberlain (North Yorkshire, United Kingdom) added a goal and an assist along the way for the Pioneers, for her second three-point outing in three games to open the season.
With the game tied at 2-2 deep into the fourth quarter, SHU (1-2) struck for its first victory of the season in the final six minutes. First, in the 55
th minute, Kidd made things happen herself, as she carried the ball ahead from the midfield and beat a defender on her way into the circle. Once there, she reversed her stick and fired a shot to cleanly beat Colgate goalkeeper Claire van Kempen for her second goal of the afternoon.
Aine Keaney (New City, N.Y.) provided the dagger less than three minutes later, with just 2:43 to play.
Ally Frampton (Somerdale, N.J.) provided the setup from the right side, as she sent the ball into the middle, to the stick of Keaney. The latter spun to her backhand and beat van Kempen upstairs to double the lead and ensure the SHU victory.
Earlier in the day, the two teams traded goals in the first quarter, and again in the third, with Colgate (1-2) scoring first both times. In the first quarter, Rachel Alderfer – reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week – popped her first goal of the season amid a scramble out front in the eighth minute. Chamberlain equalized in the 11
th minute with her second of the year for SHU, with a one-time finish from the penalty spot after
Cassie Chapjian (Cherry Hill, N.J.) did some serious work to carry down the right side of the circle and find a passing lane out front.
In the third quarter, Colgate reclaimed the lead in the 33
rd minute. This time it was Alice Walton with the finish on her first of the campaign, from right out front in the aftermath of a penalty corner. Again, the Pios leveled things, this time in the 37
th minute, when Chamberlain set up Kidd for a drive from the top of the circle on a corner play, for the latter's first career score.
Samantha Maresca (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) picked up the win (1-2) in the SHU cage with seven saves against nine shots. She had some help from her friends as well, as
Ciera Fowler (Wilmington, Del.) chipped in a pair of defensive saves on the back line and
Lizzie Mendrzycki (Hanover Township, Pa.) added her second in as many games as well.
At the other end of the field, van Kempen (1-2) made four saves against eight shots for Colgate.
The Pios are back in action on Sunday, when they hold their home opener at Johnson Field in New Haven. Game time is set for 3 p.m. against Monmouth.
