Late Goal Stymies Pioneers

Kipperman makes season debut in loss

BURLINGTON, Vt.  Sacred Heart University women's soccer battled hard but could not find a late equalizer, falling to the University of Vermont 2-1 on Thursday night.

The Pioneers were the better side through a majority of the first half, having won a penalty inside the first half hour which was converted by senior Maria Nolan. SHU continued to pressure the Catamounts the remainder of the half, including a barrage in the final five minutes that forced UVM goalkeeper Erin Murphy into pressure. The Pioneer flurry was led by first year's Lyndsey Laperle and Emily Hood who combined for four shots, including three on target, as the Pioneers looked to double the lead before halftime. However, the Catamounts held on just enough to make it to halftime down 1-0 with the Pioneers holding an 11-7 shot advantage after the first 45 minutes.

For the second consecutive game, the Pioneers would switch goalkeepers at halftime as Elyssa Kipperman made her season debut in relief of starting goalkeeper Kyran Thievon. With the Pioneers threatening, Vermont earned a break against the run of play in the 59th minute after a SHU miscue along the backline resulted in a penalty for Vermont. Though Kipperman guessed correctly, the ensuing penalty kick made its way into the net, leveling the game, 1-1. Both teams continued to find spurts of pressure, but Vermont would have the decisive chance as the Catamounts took the lead with under three minutes to play. Though the Red & White had their chances, the Vermont defense held SHU at bay as the Pios fell, 2-1.
