HAMDEN, Conn.-- The Sacred Heart University women's rugby team went 3-1 on a rainy Sunday afternoon to take second place at the Quinnipiac 7's tournament. The Pioneers won three in a row to claim a spot in the championship before falling to Army for the second-place finish.Â
Game One - Sacred Heart 35, the University of New England 0
Sacred Heart opened the 7's tournament with a dominant shutout win over UNE. Samantha McGann led the Pioneers with two tries, while Fabiola Millien-Faustin, Jasmin Quinones, and Avonlea Wood all added one try apiece.Â
Nicole Kimball was four of eight on conversions, and Makena Wright was one of two.Â
Game Two - Sacred Heart 40, American International 0Â
The Pioneers grabbed the second consecutive shutout win of the day, taking down AIC 40-0. Kimball led SHU with two tries and was two of three on conversions. Alyssa Cunningham recorded a try, and was two of two on conversions. Wright also tallied a try and went one of one on conversions. McGann and Wood rounded out scoring for the Pioneers with a try each.Â
Game Three - Sacred Heart 34, Army B 5Â
Sacred Heart won its third consecutive game of the day, beating Army 34-5. The first game that was not finished with a shutout for the Pioneers.Â
McGann and Cunningham each had two tries in the victory McGann went one of one for conversions and Cunnginham was one of three in the win. Millien-Faustin and Wright both added a try each, and Wright was zero of one in conversions.Â
Sacred Heart secured the top seed and would play Army in the championship game. In the three wins, SHU had a point differential of 109 for and five against.Â
Game Four (Championship) - Army 17, Sacred Heart 10Â
The Pioneers dropped its only game of the Quinnipiac 7's tournament, 17-10, to Army in the championship game. The Pioneers finished second on the day after a day full of rain.Â
SHU was down 10-0 in the first half, but Cunningham scored two tries to get the Pioneers on the board. Army was able to outscore SHU by one try securing a 17-10 victory as Sacred Heart took second place in the tournament.Â
