FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart Women's Hockey Class of 2023 was celebrated in every possible manner on the video board, over the sound system and in the stands at Martire Family Arena this afternoon during the last home game of the year.
All they needed for a finishing touch on Senior Day was a late goal to clinch a victory.
For the second straight day, St. Michael's and SHU skated into overtime, but this time it was a scoreless tie despite the home team having a 43-13 advantage in shots on goal.
Both teams overcame great obstacles to keep the game scoreless. The Pios killed off a pair of 5-on-3 advantages in regulation, while the Purple Knights and goalie Annika Lavender survived two (
Delani Mackay and
Katie Keenan) penalty shots.
Ten of the Pios,
Delani Mackay,
Charlotte Huntington, Rachel DeLong,
Sophie Lupone,
Cassandra Nevers,
Kelly Solak,
Nicole Guidi,
Erika Lizotte,
Elizabeth Jacobson and
Natalie Kennedy, were playing their last home games.
Sophomore
Carly Greene stopped all 13 shots she faced for SHU.
The Pios end the regular season with a 15-16-3 overall record and have a NEWHA best-of-three playoff series at Franklin Pierce starting next Friday at 4 p.m.
