Men's Basketball Prepares for Weekend at UMBC

The Pioneers will take on UMBC and Loyola

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart men's basketball team is on the road this weekend for back-to-back games at UMBC. The Pioneers will be taking on UMBC on Friday followed by Loyola (Md.) on Saturday, with both games starting at 11:00 AM.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Sacred Heart won on the road, 84-77 at Holy Cross on Tuesday evening to kickstart a three-game week.
  • The Pioneers had four players score in double figures: Tanner Thomas (21 points), Alex Sobel (15 points), Kyle McGee (11 points), Joey Reilly (10 points).
  • Sobel recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
  • McGee scored in double figures for the first time as a Pioneer and led the team in assists with four. 
OPENING TIP
  • Fresh off a road victory over Holy Cross, SHU will cap off its four-game road trip at the UMBC tournament. This will be the sixth meeting for the Pioneers and UMBC, but will take on Loyola for the first time.
  • SHU is 2-1 to start the year with wins against Sarah Lawrence (95-51) and Holy Cross (84-74), while falling to Iona (88-81).
  • Four Pioneers are averaging in double figures, Nico Galette (17.0), Tanner Thomas (15.3), Aidan Carpenter (10.3), and Alex Sobel (10.3). Sobel has two double-doubles on the season so far and Galette has one. Thomas leads SHU in rebound at 8.7 rpg and Sobel is behind at 8.0.
  • The Pios were selected first in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. Galette and graduate Joey Reilly were selected to the All-NEC preseason team. Both Galette and Reilly earned All-NEC first and third team honors last season, respectively.
  • The team voted Galette, Reilly, and McGee to be captains of the 2023-24 squad.
