Pioneers Travel to Holy Cross

SHU will play its second consecutive road game

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University men's basketball team opens a three-game week with a Tuesday evening road game at Holy Cross. Last week, the Pioneers went 1-1 with a home win over Sarah Lawrence and had a road loss to Iona to open the first week of the season.

LAST TIME OUT 

  • Nico Galette recorded his first double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds at Iona. Tanner Thomas (17), Aidan Carpenter (14), and Raheem Solomon (10) all scored in double figures for SHU. 
  • Brendan McGuire made his first appearance of the season and played 27 minutes. 
  • Senior Kyle McGee dished out a game-high seven assists. 
  • SHU shot 50.8% (31-of-61) from the field and 50% from three-point range (9-of-18) and outrebounded the Gaels 38-37.

OPENING TIP

  • Sacred Heart and Holy Cross will meet for the 18th time in series history. The Crusaders hold a 10-7 advantage over the Pioneers, but SHU has won the last two, both at home and on the road.
  • SHU has opened the season with a 1-1 record with a 95-51 victory over Sarah Lawrence and an 88-81 road loss to Iona. Galette leads the team with 22.0 points per game. He tallied a double-double against Iona (20 pts, 10 rbs), and Sobel notched one during his debut for the Pios against Sarah Lawrence (12 pts, 10 rbs).
  • Four Pioneers are averaging in double figures, Galette (22.0), Thomas (12.5), Carpenter (11.0), and Solomon (10.5). Thomas is the only SHU player averaging double figures in rebounds with 10.5.
  • The Pios were selected first in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. Galette and graduate Joey Reilly were selected to the All-NEC preseason team. Both Galette and Reilly earned All-NEC first and third-team honors last season, respectively.
  • The team voted Galette, Reilly, and senior transfer Kyle McGee to be captains of the 2023-24 squad.  
  • Galette brought in three postseason honors last season, earning all-conference, all-region, and all-met accolades.
  • Head Coach Anthony Latina enters his 11th season at the helm. Kyle Steinway was promoted to Associate Head Coach, and Tom Barrett and Anthony Richards joined the staff, both in the role of Assistant Coach.
