FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Steven Schoen's first career grand slam in the first inning opened the doubleheader for the Sacred Heart University baseball team's sweep over Mount St Mary's on Sunday. The Pioneers captured a 14-12 win in game one, followed by a 9-5 triumph in the second game.

The Pioneers led 6-0 through three innings until the Mountaineers put two runs on the scoreboard in the fourth inning.
Going into the bottom of the seventh inning, the score was knotted at seven apiece before
Joe Emerson's single to left center brought home
Robert Farruggio and
George Sutherland. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Schoen crossed the plate with help from
Joey Skarad.
The home team padded the lead in the sixth inning as Emerson's single through the left side sent Sutherland and
Ryan Donnelly home. One frame later,
Justin Jordan cranked one over the right-field fence to put the Pioneers up 13-9.
The Mountaineers brought the score within one with four runs in the eighth before pinch-runner
Mark Smith tallied an insurance run off a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth.
Mount St Mary's outhit SHU 17-13 but couldn't capitalize as they stranded 10 Mountaineers, while only six Pioneers were left on base.
Schoen led the team as he hit two of four with two runs, four RBIs and a walk. Emerson also brought in four Pioneers as he went two for five.
Jake Babuschak secured his second win of the season in 3.2 innings of work and three strikeouts. For the first time in the Red & White,
Owen MacDonnell secured the save after closing out the remaining 1.1 innings with no runs allowed and struck out two batters.

After trailing through the seventh inning, Schoen's single through the right side tied the game at five as Donnelly touched home. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Trevor Fagan was hit by a pitch which allowed Farruggio to cross the plate for the 6-5 lead.
At the next at bat,
Justin Levito's base-clearing double to centerfield brought home Fagan,
Dante D'amore and Schoen for the four-run lead.
A pair of runs scored by Levito and Jordan shortened the gap to within one in the bottom of the seventh before the game shifted in the Pioneers' favor.
In the fourth inning, Sutherland put SHU on the board for his first run of the game. Two frames later, the graduate transfer tallied another run with a solo home run out of the right field for his first time in the Red & White.
Sacred Heart outslugged the Mountaineers 13-11 as they both deserted eight on the bags.
Ryan LaMay grabbed his second win of the season after coming in as relief in the top of the sixth. LaMay allowed no runs on three hits and struck out three.
Levito landed on base at every at bat as he hit two of three with a walk, three RBIs and a run. Schoen also dominated in game two of the doubleheader after going two for three, with a walk, a run and brought one Pioneer in.
