Softball Swept by Iona

Pioneers fell 15-8 and 4-3

FAIRFIELD, Conn. The Sacred Heart University softball team was swept in the double header against Iona on Wednesday as the fell 15-8 in game one and 4-3 in game two.

Of Note:
 
  • Iona took a big 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning off a three-run home run, RBI double and passed ball.
  • They scored six unanswered runs heading into the bottom of the third inning as they took a commanding 10-0 lead which featured a two RBI double to right field off the bat of Kayla Haywood.
  • The Pioneers responded in the bottom of the inning as Maighread Scafariello ripped an RBI single to left field scoring in Victoria LoPinto to narrow the Iona lead to 10-1.
  • Then Grace Saad launched her fourth home run of the season scoring in three runs to tighten the Iona lead to 10-4.
  • Kira Ferraiolo then in the same inning rip an RBI double to left center scoring in two more runs to cut into the Gaels lead making the score 10-6.
  • SHU tallied one more run in the inning coming off a sacrifice fly by Victoria LoPinto to make the score 10-7.
  • Iona rallied back in the top of the fourth inning though as they tacked on five more runs off a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly to make the score 15-7.
  • Kylee Harvey rounded out the scoring with a an RBI double to right field in the fifth inning scoring in one to make the final score 15-8.

  • The Pioneers jumped out to an 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Alyssa Gonzalez ripped an RBI single to center field scoring in Jenna Mowad.
  • Iona countered with four runs in the second inning as a two RBI single to center by Morgan Ritchey gave the Gaels a 2-1 lead.
  • A hit batsman and single to the pitcher scored in two more runs for the Gaels to put Iona ahead 4-1.
  • Alyssa Gonzalez narrowed the Iona lead with her seventh home run of the year in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 4-3.
  • Both pitching staffs held strong not letting any more runs for the rest of the game with Jenna Pfister and Sarah Lawton coming in relief to give the Pioneers a chance as neither pitcher allowed a single run in the remaining six innings.
