WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Despite holding a 2-0 lead, the Sacred Heart University men's tennis team was unable to take down number four Long Island on Thursday in the opening round of the Northeast Conference Tournament. The Pioneers fell, 4-2.
The doubles teams of
William Wibmer and
Lefteri Apostolou at number one, and
Antoine Hernandez and
Matthew Nagel at number three, clinched the first point of the match to give SHU a 1-0 advantage.
Wibmer capped off a perfect individual day with a straight-set victory in first singles. The senior also maintained his undefeated mark against conference foes as it marked his fifth NEC win in the top spot. Despite the 2-0 cushion, the Pioneers dropped third through sixth singles in straight sets.
The Pioneers conclude the season 6-15 overall and 3-4 in NEC play.
