Pioneers Begin Series With Holy Cross Friday

FAIRFIELD, Conn.-
The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team looks to rebound after Tuesday's loss to RIT as they head to Worcester, Mass. to face Holy Cross for a two game series starting Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Last Time Out... The Pioneers are coming off a 5-1 loss to RIT on Tuesday in which senior Austin Magera scored the lone goal for SHU. RIT scored four unanswered goals which is the most the Pioneers have given up this season.

Last Meeting... The last time the Pioneers faced the Crusaders was on February 20, 2021 in which they defeated Holy Cross 5-3. Senior Marc Johnstone led the way for the Pioneers recording one goal and two assists in the victory.

Scouting The Crusaders... Holy Cross enters the Friday/Saturday series at the bottom of the Atlantic Hockey standings with a 7-18-2 overall record and 5-11-2 record in AHA play. The Crusaders are coming off a split series with AIC on January 27 and 30 as they fell in the first game 3-1 but prevailed in the second 5-4. On offense they are led by Ryan Leibold who leads the team in points and goals. In net, Matt Radomsky guards the pipes with a 4-10-2 record and GAA of 2.57.

Britt Leading the Defense... Junior transfer Logan Britt has been a solid addition to the Pioneers squad as he currently leads the team in assists with a career-high 14 on the year. He also leads all AHA defensemen in assists. The Crystal Lake, Ill. native has captured AHA Defensive Player of the Week three times this year.

Stealing the Win.. Senior Ryan Steele currently sits tied for second in the nation in game-winning goals this year. The senior currently has four on the season which is a career-high.

Three More to Go.... Senior netminder Josh Benson is three wins away from hitting the Atlantic Hockey all-time top ten wins list. He currently has 40 in his career.

Age Means Experience..... According to the most recent College Hockey news statistics update, the Pioneers rank tied for third in the nation in team age averaging around 22 years old. Three other Atlantic Hockey teams follow suit as AIC is first averaging at 23.2 years old, followed by RIT and Niagara.

Goehring the Game-Winner.... For the second time in the history of the CT Ice Tournament, senior Todd Goehring scored the game-winning goal to either clinch the championship or take home third place. In Sunday's consolation match against Yale, Goehring scored the game-winning goal with 1:40 remaining in the overtime period. That was the first goal the senior scored since November 22 at Air Force.

Tuck for Hobey..... Junior forward Braeden Tuck, has been nominated for the 2022 Hobey Baker Award. Tuck is one of 77 nominees for the award, and one of nine from Atlantic Hockey. In its 41st year, the Hobey Baker Award is presented annually to the top NCAA Division I men's ice hockey player.

The team captain is third on the squad in points with 17 as he has accumulated a career-high nine goals and eight assists. Last season, he earned a spot on the Second-Team All-AHA. In his freshman season he was named Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year and selected to the First-Team All-AHA for his incredible 23 assist, five goal season.
