CHARLESTON, W.Va. – After being on the cusp of an EIVA victory the last few weekends, the Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team came through on Saturday. The Pioneers outlasted the University of Charleston, 3-2 (19-25, 25-25, 27-25, 19-25, 15-10).

After winning sets two and three, Sacred Heart was pushed to a fifth set. The Pioneers got out to a fast start in the fifth set, but allowed Charleston back into the game.
Aaron Peterson came through with a block then two points later a
Patrick Mucherino kill gave SHU a 10-6 lead.Â

Sacred Heart hit .444 in the fifth set with no errors. The Pioneers also had a .333 rate on its way to winning the second set, 25-13.

SHU had a pair of set points in the third frame, but couldn't come through. Tied 25-25,
Mark Berry produced a kill then an UC hitting error gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.

Mucherino just missed out on a double-double with 15 kills and eight digs. Rookie
Dylan McClung had a season-high 10 kills. Peterson and Berry followed with eight winners.

Cole Younger tallied 11 digs.

The win was SHU's first conference victory since 2019 when it topped UC 3-0 on April 13, 2019. The Pioneers had lost their last 28 EIVA contests.
